Marijuana use is becoming more and more acceptable in modern societies. Its medicinal uses continue to be heralded as a use against chronic pain but also to treat the effects of multiple sclerosis, cancer and even Crohn’s disease. However, it is still used illicitly by many and with some employers requiring drug tests at the beginning of employment and then periodically or randomly throughout, it is necessary for some people to detox from marijuana.
When marijuana is smoked or consumed, the effects hit you almost immediately. However, once the effects have worn off, the remnants can remain in your system for a substantial amount of time. Just how long depends on many factors, including your individual metabolism, diet and body fat stores. The largest factor that determines how long the drug stays in your system though is how much of the drug is consumed and unfortunately, because the variables depend completely on a person’s individual body, there is no hard and fast rules.

As mentioned though, there are many other factors that influence how quickly your body flushes out the remnants of the drug.
How long does it take to detox from marijuana?
It’s important to note first that the most influential aspect of how quickly you can successfully flush the THC cannabinoids out of your system is how much you have consumed. Typically, for a first time or non regular user, anything from 3 to 7 days is a reasonable expectation. Consuming on two or three consecutive days will lengthen that typical period up to 2 to 3 weeks and finally, for heavy users, anything up to 3 months is a possibility. If you know when you need to detox your system by, the above time frames are a reasonable estimate and with a home testing kit, you can have a good idea. However, if you need to speed up that process there are certain things that can be done!
Increasing your metabolism is the first port of call and this means exercise. Aerobic exercise, which is more often referred to as cardio is most suited to speeding up your metabolism, but anaerobic (or weight training) also has its place. An exercise regime that contains both of these elements is most likely to have a faster effect on cleansing your system. Rather than one workout that combines both these training styles, due to the way your body responds to exercise, two separate workouts would be more beneficial.
As with any workout program, a well balanced diet is important. When going through a detox regime though, the importance of a high protein intake is increased. Stick to lean meats, beans and pulses so as not to thwart your fat loss progress. A diet high in fiber is a healthy long term goal to pursue, but during the marijuana detox phase it is imperative. THC is fat soluble, so it cannot be simply flushed with a high intake of water; much of the remnants of the drug will be excreted. Also ensure that your diet is full of high antioxidant foods such as spinach, broccoli and blueberries and aim to eat 5 smaller meals throughout the day to aid in increasing your metabolism.
Drinking plenty of water will aid in hydrating your body and helping to flush the toxins. As mentioned, THC is a fat soluble drugs, so drinking large amounts of water will not decrease the time it takes to cleanse your system, but it will aid in keeping your body working optimally, especially considering the exercise. Green tea is also known to speed up your metabolism, so a cup or two a day could help the THC detox process.
Unfortunately, the bottom line is that there are no hard and fast rules for speeding the process up for detoxifying from marijuana. However, a healthy lifestyle that includes a balanced diet with good fluid intake and plenty of exercise can only serve to aid the process!
